Making a Difference in Oakville

The Event:
The Oakville Wheels in Motion is excited to announce our 2010 plans to have the best event yet. Taking place on the beautiful Lake Ontario waterfront at Appleby College our event will feature a wheelchair challenge, a wheel/walk through campus, lots of food and drinks, activities for children, live entertainment, gift bags and an opportunity to participate with your community in making it more accessible for those living in and visiting Oakville.

Please join us on Sunday June 13th, 2010 at 9:00 am!

Special Guests:
We are happy to announce that Oakville Mayor Robert Burton, Councillor Ralph Robinson, MP Terrence Young and many more will be attending our event.

2004 Olympian and Silver Medalist, 2003 Pan Am Games Bernard Luttmer is our keynote speaker discussing his journey as an athlete and how he has come to support accessible sailing.

Accessible Boat Rides:
CharterAbility, a local organization which provides barrier-free chartered boat rides for people of all ages, will be providing complementary boat trips following the event. Families and individuals can register for boat rides at the event.

*The docking system used by CharterAbility was made possible from past Wheels in Motion events where money raised went towards the development of the accessible dock, the PARDners Dock, which allows people with spinal cord injury and other disabilities to participate in boating activities on Oakville’s Harbour.

2010 Oakville’s Quality of Life Project:
Inspired by Melissa Vassallo’s story as an Oakville resident seeking ways to increase the accessibility of 16 Mile Creek, Wheels in Motion Oakville has partnered with the Oakville Yacht Squadron to establish an accessible sailing program. With the money raised from this year’s event an accessible sail boat and associated equipment can be purchased to allow persons with a disability living in and visiting our Town to access the water.

Following the event the Oakville Yacht Squadron will be providing free accessible sailboat rides hosted by Ontario Sailing. This is a great opportunity for those that are interested in trying accessible sailing to go out with Ontario Sailing instructors for twenty minute sailboat rides. Individuals can register for accessible sailing at the event or by contacting Melissa Vassallo at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .
